This final post may not be actually final, but in order to get credit...it will be the final one for that.
I remember one morning just getting in the car going to school and flipping around the dial. I was probably in 6th grade and I heard a prank call. It had some foul poopy type jokes and I being the immature person I was, and still am I might add, decided to listen more. My parents hated it. And when parents don't want you to do something, you have extra incentive to do it. So I would take a walkman with me in the car and listen to that station I found for the next few days, and it grew on me.
Soon, it was summer. I didn't have school at 8 a.m. and tuned in on a daily basis and the show grew on me like a fungus. I was learning things, good and bad, I could never in a classroom. They had some woman come in and give one of the retards on the show his first ever sexual experience. I could not believe what I was hearing, but I continued to listen. There were mornings where I didn't have to wake up until whenever, but I did at 5:50 a.m. so I could catch the beginning of the show.
When school started again in the fall, I needed to listen to them no matter what. So I had my grandma record between 8-10 in the morning. I had that routine from 6th grade up until my 2nd year of college. Ever since then, mornings just haven't been the same. Without the Dog House, it may sound stupid, but I don't have happy mornings. I figured out I'm not a morning person to begin with, but without them on the radio, I just can't find the motivation. That's why sometimes when I would've been in a good mood before class, I really have no mood. I'm not angry, but I'm not happy either. It sucks. When will it end?
Words probably couldn't express how a simple radio show has influenced my life. So much that they were the reason I wanted to get into radio. Luckily, I had a slot on the school station, which nobody listens to I might add, this semester. So if you have time, go download a show or two of mine, and let me know how it is. Even if you listen for five minutes, great. And if you want more, it's all there for the taking.
bshow.blogspot.com
That is the website with all the shows.
On a closing note, I really hope The Dog House pops up somewhere I can listen to them. Mornings are not the same. And if you never gave them a shot, give them one if they ever make it back into the airwaves.
The next time you see a post here, will probably be when The Dog House returns...
So let's hope that is soon. Thank you for reading, and please, if you get a chance, listen to my show...

So that's why they got fired...Free-FM is dead!
Last week, Free-FM here in San Francisco decided to kill its format, FM talk and go back to KFCR 106.9. Late last year, KFRC 99.7 became Movin' 99.7.
Free-FM did not work here because nobody cared who was on. There was no incentive to start listening. Nobody was local. Adam Corolla, Opie and Anthony, Tom Leykis, etc...all did not broadcast from the Bay Area. The Dog House filled in for a few months when Free-Fm launched, but they had a deal with Corolla, so the dogs went to the east coast on the New York Free-FM. If they had the Dog House, that could've gotten them some ratings initially and could've used them to build an audience. They had John London for a while, but they fired him also for some insensitive remarks. They never showed up in the ratings book and now, they flip back to KFRC, basically conceding that they really f'd up.
Now in New York, they flipped back to their original format as well, K-Rock, Howard Stern's original station. They fired all the jocks on the station, except for the morning show. So it is possible the Free-FM in New York was ready to get rid of Elvis and JV regardless, but had a reason to because of the "offensive" prank call. At least this way, legally, maybe they wouldn't have to pay the rest of their contract.
But really a weird few weeks of radio. Rarely will companies admit they are wrong and go back to what it changed from originally.

You're my satellite...
With the Dog House off the air, for now, it brings up the question whether they will go to satellite radio. Howard Stern, once again, the pioneer, went to Sirius at the beginning of this year and if you consider the millions of listeners that once listened to him religiously, not many have followed him.
A satellite radio costs approximately $9.95/month and not many people are willing to pony up the extra money on a monthly basis.
When the Dog House first left the Bay Area, JV said that he did not believe in satellite radio and didn't think people should have to pay for their radio.
The good things about satellite are there are pretty much no commercials and so many specialty stations, with just a specific genre. They don't have to worry too much about ratings and therefore just appeal to a certain target demographic.
That brings up the question, should we pay for radio like we do for tv? Conveniently, there is a poll below. I know I would definitely pay to listen to the Dog House. But judging by the number of listeners that bought a Sirius set for Stern, it's unlikely many will do so for the Dog House. But keep hope alive.

TV vs Radio
What I find so strange is that television seems to get a free pass when it comes to edgy material. I also want to say that I don't think TV should be restricted. Is it fine the way it is? No. But is it horrible? Also, no.
What I am trying to say is that nobody seems to care about what is said on TV, or at least it seems like it is acceptable in society. You have stand-up comedy, which has had a huge push in the 2000s, where people constantly poke fun at races, joke after joke. Racial slurs are used repeatedly and racial stereotypes are brought to attention. But all this is ok, because it is in the comedy genre.
Well, then how the hell is that different with shows like Imus or the Dog House? These are both comedic shows. It isn't like this ran on a news station. The demographic this radio station is catering to is the 18-34 male. Not people who do not have jobs, and sit and wait to protest about anything offensive.
Bottom line is I do not get why it's such a big deal when someone says something on the radio. They reach far less people. Plus, ask yourself...when is the last time you saw something offensive in the last year on TV? And then ask yourself when is the last time you even listened to the radio?
For a lot of people, offensive items on the screen outweigh even the times they flick on a radio switch...
Glenn Beck isn't too happy, if you have time, check out his thoughts. I'll be back with more tomorrow...

You are a hypocrite...
I am Asian and did not find the Dog House bit offensive, maybe because I am a flat-out homer or perhaps I know when something is a joke. In no way shape or form was that prank call mean spirited.
I do have a problem with some of my friends who are Asian and say that the bit was offensive. Well, let me ask you. When you laugh at all the racist jokes on television, i.e. Chappelle Show, it's ok right, because it is not about your race or nationality. However, when the arrow points at you, it's no longer funny. And that isn't just with this bit.
It seems like more often than not, people can't handle jokes that are about them or affiliated with them. But when it is about someone else or something not related to them, they can die of laughter.
Please, if it is offensive, it should either be offensive all the time and not just when you are the butt of the joke. So when you do laugh at someone else's expense, and won't play along when it's on you, you're the one who looks like the ass.
A whole lot more ranting in the days to come...

Dog House Update: FIRED!
This has been a very bad week:
From the AP:
NEW YORK: One month after CBS Radio fired radio host Don Imus for broadcasting sexist and racist gibes, it has permanently pulled the plug on a pair of suspended New York shock jocks for a prank phone call rife with offensive Asian stereotypes.
"The Dog House with JV and Elvis," hosted by Jeff Vandergrift and Dan Lay, "will no longer be broadcast," CBS Radio spokeswoman Karen Mateo said Saturday.
The cancellation of the show on WFNY-FM, nearly three weeks after the hosts were suspended, was another indication of the increased scrutiny on radio hosts and the heightened management sensitivity to complaints in the wake of the Imus firing.
CBS Radio dismissed Imus in April for his racist and sexist remarks about the Rutgers women's basketball team.
Vandergrift and Lay broadcast a call to a Chinese restaurant in which the caller, in an exaggerated accent, placed an order for "shrimp flied lice," claimed he was a student of kung fu, and compared menu items to employees' body parts.
The initial airing of the call went unnoticed, but a rebroadcast after Imus's firing prompted an outcry from Asian-American groups. Vandergrift and Lay were initially suspended without pay, but Asian-Americans quickly demanded the same penalty applied to the much higher-profile Imus.
"This is a victory not only for the Asian-American community, but for all communities who find themselves constant targets of racist and sexist programming," said Jeanette Wang, an executive with the Organization of Chinese Americans.
Mateo would not comment on the status of the DJs' contracts or whether they were still on the CBS payroll.
Imus plans a $120 million (€89 million)breach of contract suit against CBS Radio.
More on this tomorrow...

Dog House Update: Still SUSPENDED
The Dog House has been suspended for what will be 3 weeks come tomorrow, for a prank call that has been done over and over and over in radio.
In case you missed it, here's the prank:
The weird thing was this prank call was played originally when The Dog House was in San Francisco. They happened to play the bit the day after the entire Imus fiasco. At that time, the Imus situation did not hit the fan, so they thought it would be ok.
Then for some apparent reason, whether it was their choice or not, the bit was replayed a few weeks later. Now the OCA, Organization of Chinese Americans, is demanding that like Imus--The Dog House get fired. At this point, it looks that way. 3 weeks for a silly little prank that was not mean spirited or hateful.
Here is a clip of the woman who is representing the OCA on Hannity and Colmes, and thankfully she was put in her place...
What do you think? More on this topic that irks me on a daily basis coming within the next few days...

The Dog House Suspended
As of May 2nd, 2007, The Dog House is still off the airwaves. They are in best-of mode. Here is the original article. Below if the prank and you can voice your opinion on whether you thought this warranted a suspension.
From the San Francisco Chronicle:
CBS Radio suspended two New York City radio hosts on Monday for their prank phone call to a Chinese restaurant that Asian American advocacy groups across the country decried as racist, sexist and vulgar.
"In my 20 years of civil rights work, I have rarely seen something as serious as this," said Frank Lee, president of the Organization for Justice and Equality, a Bay Area advocacy group that expressed outrage, along with the Organization of Chinese Americans in Washington, D.C., Bay Area politicians and others.
Jeff Vandergrift and Dan Lay of WFNY-FM, who go by the monikers "JV" and "Elvis" on their show The Dog House, placed a six-minute call Friday to a Chinese restaurant requesting "flied lice" and using sexually explicit language to proposition the waitress.
The station suspended the pair without pay and until further notice.
Vandergrift and Lay performed in the same show format on Bay Area radio stations starting in the early 1990s. In 2005, Clear Channel Communications fired the duo from Wild 94.9 after they made offensive remarks after an appearance by a local drum and bugle corps.
They filled in at KIFR, an FM station in San Francisco, before moving to New York.
Their suspension follows the firing of New York radio host Don Imus in mid-April after he made racist and sexist comments about Rutgers University's women's basketball team on his news and talk show.

Imus Situation
I was particularly disturbed about the entire Imus fiasco. I never listened to the man but if he was like any other type of shock jock, why should it even matter?
Howard Stern, Mancow, The Dog House...etc all make these types of comments every now and then in a joking way, so I don't know why all of a sudden it changed. It is a double-standard obviously because Imus, a white guy, makes these comments and gets grilled and fired in this case. However, if you are black, and use it in a rap song and degrade women song after song, it's ok.
When the tsunami hit, they made a parody on a New York station and it wasn't even funny. I am Asian and honestly I didn't care, but a lot of people sure did. I don't think the jock got fired for that and that was way more offensive. That was a planned segment where as Imus just sort of spur of the moment said it.
This sets a bad precedent because what the hell can we joke about anymore? Does anybody seriously think the Rutgers basketball team listened to Imus and for that matter, even know who Imus is?
I have a whole lot more to say to this, and you can listen to them this Saturday on the school radio station, or check out my other blog

Quit Eye(Spot)balling me Boy!
The title of this blog entry refers to their CD a few years ago, entitled, "Quit Eyeballing Me Boy!"
In a nut shell, here's the video I made about the Dog House. Kind of generic since Eyespot didn't offer too much copyrighted material--my favorite.
So briefly, the video below is a brief run down about some notable things The Dog House has done over the few years. What their show was generally about and what it featured. It doesn't get into it all, but does highlight some things about their tenure in the Bay Area.

Why The Dog House Is Gone/Comedy Jam
The Dog House had a successful run for nearly a decade as the morning show in the San Francisco Bay Area. They shattered ratings records left and right and were the THING to listen to every morning from 6-10 a.m.
JV, host of The Dog House, always wanted to be syndicated. Clear Channel and their station Wild 94.9 never backed them. JV informed the program director that The Dog House was not going to re-sign with the station at the end of the year.
The show was alawys rude and obnoxious, poking fun at guests when they came in studio. Then comes April 2005, some band performing a concert came in and Elvis, the co-host of the show said that people join bands in high school because they are too fat to be cheerleaders. He then said he was joking. The girl was upset and told the program director, who then suspended The Dog House.
A few days later, he fired the entire show, hoping to get a head start in rebuilding the station. Wild 94.9, the station The Dog House built, never gave The Dog House what Elvis and JV gave the station. From that day forward, I refuse to listen to that station, AND YOU SHOULDN'T EITHER!!!
What added insult to injury was a comedy event JV came up with called The Dog House Comedy Jam. Acts like Dave Chappelle, Jamie Foxx, Shawn Wayans, Dave Attell, Ralphie May--the list goes on and on and on...
This event would pack The Shoreline in Mountain View every summer. And even after The Dog House got fired, Wild 94.9 still ran the event, claiming it was their invention.
This brings up the next point of the biggest backstabber of them all--Carlos Mencia. Mencia would not even have a career if it wasn't for The Dog House. Mencia headlined every single Comedy Jam The Dog House ever put on, and still did the show when he knew The Dog House was fired from the station.
Mencia is a sell-out and plus, he steals jokes...See this, Mencia gets called out by Joe Rogan for stealing jokes, and Carlos Mencia's real name is really Ned.
The Dog House put Carlos Mencia and Dave Chappelle on the map and were the catalyst for the big boom in stand-up comedy in the last several years. They packed a stadium of 25,000+ and the rest of the nation recognized this. They then started putting on comedy tours themselves. The Dog House did a lot of things, i.e. Comedy Jams and all the Jackass stunts (see previous posts) that they never got credit for at all--and that totally sucks...
The Dog House however has landed on their feet and are on in New York's Free-FM. You can listen online every morning from 6-9 PT.
Listen Live
I just hope one day they come back and get syndicated. My mornings just aren't the same...

Letters...Letters...Lots and lots of letters
When The Dog House got emails, they used to play a very very catchy sound bite. "Letters, letters, lots and lots of letters that were sent to us from you."
Very goofy and childish, but nonetheless, as a Dog House fan, I loved the drop. So this blog will address every single question that has been left since this blog has started. Does anyone bother reading this blog even though you are not required to for class? I'd bet no, but if you are...your question will be answered.
Theo writes:
Q. What ever happened to the Dog House?
A. They are now in New York, hosting a middays show from 9-12 on the Free FM in New York.
Q. Did John London ever host that show?
A. John London never hosted the show. However, JV's idol as a young kid was John London when he used to be on KMEL with Renel.
Q. Can you find archived podcasts of the show?
Go to The Dog House Blog for all the latest news on The Dog House. There you can find current bits and other information.
Larry writes:
Q. Did the Dog House get any credit or compensation for inspiring Jack(booty)?
A. Not at all. Sad, sad, sad...
Andy writes:
Q. Have Howard Stern and other shock jocks leaving for satellite radio opened the door for these guys?
A. No, they've been around for nearly a decade and have been strong in the ratings in the Bay Area when they were here. JV, host of The Dog House doesn't believe we need to pay for radio and therefore does not want to go on satellite radio.
Sadly, those were all the questions I got...But if you got any, shoot them to me. But for now, enjoy a classic Dog House bit...

Jackass is a rip-off of The Dog House!!!
Most people have seen the MTV show called Jackass. I am fortunate enough to have listened to it years before the show came out, and even seen video from it before it hit the airwaves.
Why you ask?
Because a lot, and really, the majority of stunts and pranks that are on Jackass were ripped off from The Dog House. (First time readers, if you have time, scroll through this blog to learn more about the Dog House) Bicycle jousting, colon cleansing, amongst other stuff Johnny Knoxville and friends did and do were all done by The Dog House years before MTV got a hold of it.
The producer of Jackass lived in the Bay Area and listened to The Dog House every morning. He liked the show and asked JV, the host, if he was interested in doing some type of show for MTV. JV loved the idea, but was unwilling to leave the Bay Area for Los Angeles. So the producer basically listened, jotted down ideas, and found anybody to do the stunts...And now you have Jackass.
Below is a video, and you can take a look at all the crazy stunts The Dog House did way before Jackass stole them. But you might be bored, seeing that you already may have seen all this already on MTV. (sarcasm if you didn't catch that)
Why you ask?
Because a lot, and really, the majority of stunts and pranks that are on Jackass were ripped off from The Dog House. Last Interview with Biggie
One of the most memorable Dog House interviews they ever did was with the Notorious B.I.G. They are known to ask very controversial questions, and they don't just kiss the ass of whichever celebrity they are talking to.
One time, Puff Daddy, or is it Diddy, or is he P. Diddy, Sean Combs...etc...was in studio and JV, host of the show, asked him why don't west coast rap artists get as much representation on the east coast. It seemed to be a valid question, and the artist formerly known as Puff Daddy erupted. They went into a song and Puffy threatened to kick JV's ass. The confrontation was very heated and Diddy and his entourage all left, taking with them the video the Dog House wanted to record.
So for you rap and hip-hop fans, and for even those who aren't, the final media interview of The Notorious B.I.G. He was murdered days later.

Prank Calls You Will Not Believe
The Dog House were one of the first few shows in the country to do prank phone calls. They rarely do them nowadays because they are so tired and played out. A lot of the ones they did were copied by shows in Hawaii, LA, Chicago, NY...
They had a daily segment where a listener would email or fax in a request to Elvis.
(guy on the left)
"Dear Dog House,
Can you please do a prank call on my friend Jennifer? She met a guy at the club last Saturday and he hasn't called her? Would you pretend to be that guy and mess with her?"
So Elvis would then make the call, say all sorts of weird stuff, and then finally tell her that he is actually Elvis from the Dog House and her friend wanted to do a prank call on them. A lot of morning jocks do this, even Don Bleu on Star 101.3. I think he calls it the Bleuper, pronounced blooper...
That soon got a little old so the Dog House found a way to be innovative, going places no other morning show had ever dared--going somewhere that any human being probably wouldn't dare.
This following set of calls were called the "Dicked Calls". Like the name of the calls says, these calls were dicked (messed up). Like JV explains, these were calls that they did not want to make, but because they had to--they did.
CLICK, LISTEN AND ENJOY...

Who and WHAAAAT is the Dog House?
The Dog House is hands down one of the most popular on-air programs that has ever hit the Bay Area airwaves.
In the early 90s, JV and Hollywood, best friends since high school, were working morning drive in Bakersfield and Modesto. They then met the third member of the Dog House family Elvis a few years later. The three started working their radio magic, paid their dues in small markets, and then made their way to the now defunct Hot 97.7 in San Jose.
In 1995, KYLD in San Francisco, one of the biggest urban station in the country decided to plug The Dog House into their morning drive. They shattered ratings and reached numbers that were unheard of. They had a 10.8 share, which meant at least 10% of the entire radio listening audience was tuned in--numbers unheard of in any market.
The Dog House were pioneers in radio as other morning shows across the country commonly tried to duplicate their material and imitate them. They rode motorcycles into the bay, had crew members make out with a retard and even taped this segment so they could show their fans at a comedy show...WARNING! BE PREPARED...IT COULD BE HILARIOUS TO SOME AND JUST AWFUL TO OTHERS...DON'T WORRY...NO NUDITY...YOU PROBABLY HAVE NEVER SEE ANYTHING LIKE THIS!
They were very edgy and foul, but they always found a way to give back to the community. They constantly raised money for people in need. JV swam from Alcatraz to shore to help raise money for a sick child. Hollywood walked from San Francisco to a San Jose hospital collecting money for an infant with a disease. They also opened phone lines for people who couldn't afford funerals for loved ones, amongst other things.

The Official Dog House Blog
This is the Official Dog House Blog. Here you can catch updates on what happened today on the show, as well as links to all the Dog House fan sites. They do a really good job of organizing the break downs of the show, uploading the pictures and once in a while a funny video they would like to share.
Since I am not in the Big Apple, I find this page to be very informative and it keeps me up to date as to what my favorite show is doing on the east coast.
The only thing I would change about it is be a little more descriptive about what is actually going on, instead of a few sentences. It would be a lot tougher to do. Also, different pictures of the actual hosts of the show more often would not hurt. Put them on the blog instead of forcing readers to click on the right hand side to find photos. Yea...I'm even lazy on the Internet.
DogHousefans.Com
DogHouseFans website is where you go to get updates straight from the show. On this page, once you click on the little logo on the bottom of the right hand side, JV, the co-host of The Dog House usually writes a new piece every day or two about how he is doing and what the direction of the show is taking.
The biggest negative about this site is that it is at times very hard to navigate. It would be helpful if there was a link that said something to the effect of "From JV and the rest of the crew" as opposed to a picture that very few people know they have to click on to see the blog.
Kevie's Doghouse Ish
This is a fansite type blog, where the author draws sketches of the characters that appear on the show. It is really funny and creative if you are aware of the people who are involved with The Dog House.
To improve it, add more context about these characters in case people do not know the full story behind it. Although it would not work for all of them, because the joke on some of these pictures are all in the picture, thus explaining it would make it less funny.
